Sooooo... I have a meeting in Seattle with Peanut Butter Publishing on Monday, March 8 at 1:00 with Mr Wolfe to take a look at LESTER. I am both nervous and excited. Let's hope he likes it and can get it published just the way we want it in a timely manner. After all these years its finally nearly ready for the printer. Let's all hold our breath, cross our fingers, hope for the best, etc, etc, etc.....

The Twenty Three Mile Trail

Sooooo... Karen Louise and Neva Jo are going to walk every foot of the Lewis & Clark via the Columbia River shoreline trail. Karen stepped up. What a trooper. And Jessica will be here for part of March while Michael does a dental rotation in Walla Walla and she and Riley Jo and Emma Louise and Karen Louise and Neva Jo will walk bits and pieces of it since Jessica will still be carrying the newest little Maxfield baby girl. We'll let you know if we see any Indians or campfires....or....

SMACK DAB ON THE RIVER

Soooo... I've been telling Walter about some new condominiums that have been built on the river, RIGHT on the river, smack dab on the river, and today we took a look and sure enough you could look right out the window and the beautiful Columbia River was flowing peacefully by just a few feet away. I asked the builder why nobody had ever built there before and he said the Port of Benton was finally ready to let go of some of its land. Nowhere else in the TriCities can you be this close to the river, not on the Pasco side, not on Harris, not off Selph Landing Road... Anyway, my children will remember us being in the boat watching blue cranes unload the middle hull of a nuclear submarine for permanent burial at Handford, well, it's just down river a little bit from that off loading dock, further up than the University, almost directly across from Battelle PNNL. They are selling for $539,000.00 for about 3,000 sq. ft. (probably the river factor is worth about $200,000 of that price.) ANYWAY while we were checking out the listing we decided to take a brisk walk upriver. The paved walking path used to end at Washington State University, but now it goes up and beyond the condos and the submarine off loading dock. There was some information posted showing the whole bike/walking path. It starts over by Pasco at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia River at Sacajawea State park, heads north on the East Side of the river until you cross over the NEW BRIDGE and then goes further north on the Richland side of the river. Going south you walk/bike on the West side of the river past Columbia Point, past Bateman Island, through Columbia Park and back across the river to your starting point by crossing over the cable bridge beside Clover Island. It is a 23 mile loop.

I've decided I want to walk every step of the 23 mile loop. I'm looking for a walking buddy to walk it with me, because I am, as you all know, afraid of dogs. Since some of the path is part of the official Lewis and Clark trail, I thought it would be an educational, recreational, body thinning, weight losing trek. I'm not quite up to 23 miles in one day, so splitting the endeavor into several walks on nice sunny days. (AND we have plenty of those, don't we, my SOGGY SEATTLE DAUGHTERS?????)

Monica, if you weren't way over the mountains, we could push Isaac Buster in the strolller and knock it out in no time. But sigh, that probabaly isn't going to happen.

Maybe Karen Maxfield will step up, if she can get home from Maui or New York or San Francisco...

Erica would be a good walking buddy but alas she's saving her vacation time for Disneyland.
Jessica would be a great walking partner, but all three little girls would probably hold her back.

This charming little yellow house is soooo cute. Deanna was such a good sport to get it freshly painted. Jared and I worked on 'staging' and tomorrow it's officially 'on the market.' The office will be touring, the sign goes up with TB's and my name name rider on it. The lockbox will be on and it's entered into the MLS. Here we go....

Sooooo.... here we are in the new year. We packed up Christmas and put it all away. Removed the wreath from the door, boxed up every Santa, every ornament, re boxed the trees and cleaned the house. Then there really was no excuse but to get into the selling of Real Estate. I get up in the morning and act as if I'm working. I dress right, walk out the door, go to the office, look at the hot sheet, preview the new listings, check the interest rates, find the new streets that look unfamiliar to me AND........do it all the next day. It is starting to feel like the old routine, kinda.

Jessica and Michael and Riley and Emma made it safely over the pass tonight. Emma was having trouble settling down so Riley was singing her a lullaby to soothe her. Jessica told both girls the car could go faster if there was no screaming.Tomorrow will be sugar cookie baking day. Riley and Grandpa conduct this operation, Emma will be helping now that she's two, and if she gets bored I'll get out the 'barbeques" (barbie dolls)

Walter noticed the cutest little handprint on a windowpane by our dinner table tonight and said, "hopefully we'll have more of those in just a few more days." The prime rib went well, the ouffs le nige was perfect, the shrimp coctktail just like my mother used to make it so you have to eat it with a spoon instead of a fork, I roasted brussels sprouts with a little bacon and fresh mushrooms ( I read somewhere that if you roast the sprouts instead of boiling them your house won't smell like brussels sprouts for days...)which reminds me... the first Relief Society meeting I went to in the Stockport ward, a woman rushed in and said, "Oh, I'm so late I didn't have time to make a proper supper so I just threw some sprouts in the chip pan and ran out the door.." sprouts? what kind of sprouts, alphalpha sprouts, bean sprouts?? "NO, SPROUTS, you know, SPROUTS!"

Erica is baking up a storm at her house today, 36-hour cookies, lemon bars, swedish 3-layer bars, yum,yum,yum.

Eight Days to Christmas

Sooooo... Here I am at Progressive Sales taking floor time til 6:30 PM yeeeeeeesssssss that does mean I am selling real estate again. Nobody seems surprised by that fact, except me. Terry Broussard and I teamed up and re-entered the real estate business. We are working on a cute little house in Richland. If we sell it today, I'll let you know.

Meanwhile, I'm finetuning my options for dinner on Friday evening, our first holiday meal. I've ruled out turkey, ham, even barbequed steak. Fred Meyer had a good price on prime rib so we are giving that a try. I guess you just roast it, serve it with a pink center and that makes it prime rib instead of just a roast, (right ?) Walter wants to look up some instructions in the JOY of cooking book, but I never trust instructions, being more the determined -to- mess-it- up- type. I'll be calling Monica to get her horseradish sauce recipe. ( suppose you can tell the phones are NOt ringing off the hook here at work.......)

Ten Days to Christmas

December 15th, 2009. The trees are decorated (5 this year) the Christmas shopping done, the packages wrapped, the annual Christmas letter mailed ( we were too busy to even do one last year) and I am wondering what to do with myself. Besides the actual necessary housecleaning, I am going to DUST because Kathy is coming over on Friday. (Kathy even cleans under her refrigerator when she has guests)

Thanksgiving was wonderful, cozy, warm. We all worked together on the food. Erica and Riley made the hot rolls. We sat down at 5 with 10 for dinner and 11 pies. Erica's chunky chocolate pecan pie was the most popular. I made a bumbleberry pie (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, bosenberries) Once we start making pies we don't know when to quit.

We celebrated Jessica's 28th birthday. We are so excited that she and Micheal are expecting their third little girl. They make beautiful little girls.

Here's what's been happening. Dave and Missy Schlotffeldt of Universal Home Builders built us a nice new house. It was on the builder's parade of homes in September and we moved into it at the end of September. On September 26th we were in Panaca for the 100th anniversary of Lincoln County High School. Lester Mathews graduated from that school in 1937 and Neva in 1967. We went on to Denver for Shelley's wedding, which was lovely. While in Denver we got a call that Monica had gone to the hospital in Bellevue. She met Isaac Buster Reese there on October 4, 2009 and brought him home a couple of days later. He is the cutest baby boy ever!

It all rushed right past us. The season was merry and bright, and we were busier than we wanted to be. We've savored every card, every bit of news from family and friends. Thanks for keeping us on your Christmas lists. This is the first Christmas season in many, many years that we didn't manage a Christmas letter of our own. We love you all just as much. We'll have twice as much news when we get out the 2009 letter. Promise.

Sooo we survived this past week. We re-arranged the store and had an invitation only Christmas Open House on Friday Night and a public one on Saturday. The Tri-Cities showed us once again that it manages to be recession proof. We were gratified by the turn out. In fact, it was amazing and fun to have so much excitement in the shop. We rang and warpped and bagged and sooo enjoyed seeing loyal customers and happy new faces.

Peek-A-Boo-Emma

This is Emma on about August 14th 2008. When we say peek-a-boo she looks around for somehting to hide behind, like a towel, a burb cloth, a diaper, a blanket, but she wasn't finding much in the front of the boat. It only took her a second or two to think of using her dress, then she smoothed it down modestly, as if to say, "see, I can play peek-a-boo ..."

Today is Sunday. It is the day after what would have been (or what was, I'm sure) the Pioneer Celebration in Panaca. I thought about it all day yesterday. I was at Jefferson Park selling some antiques we didn't need at Nest Feathers any more and I saw Gary Griggs come by wearing a gray Panaca Mercantile t-shirt. Seemed appropriate for the day. (Gary is Martin's grandpa.)

Anyway, it was less than 100 degrees in the shade. There was a tiny breeze. Walter ran the store by himself, didn't have to wrap a single gift. TW came by and told me a good tale. She was in Portland buying up for E-bay and on the way home something went wrong with the van. She had her granddaughter remove a shoelace from her shoe, she stopped by the side of the road in the middle of the night and 'repaired' the van with the shoelace. She didn't know what it was that was falling apart but she tied it back together and came on home. TB came by and tended the antiques for a bit so I could get Walter to come and load up what was left. Jared and I went over to TB's to hang her pictures. The good story at breakfast was that TW and TB both found it remarkable that I considered some of Jared's opinions. Of course, they were overruled but nonetheless, considered....
